Sweet revenge May 24, 2007

Milan won Uefa Champions League with 2-1 and is a sweet revenge for the final lost in 2005.
The opportunist Filippo Inzaghi scored twice this night and took the cup.
Filippo Inzaghi was delighted to repay the trust of his coach Carlo Ancelotti after scoring twice to fire AC Milan to victory against Liverpool FC and UEFA Champions League glory yet again.
In 2003 Inzaghi won Champions League and in Instanbul missed it because of an injury.
When I moved to Milan I never thought I could repeat my success at Juventus, never thought I could win two Champions League titles. It’s difficult to take in but my relationship with Milan is special. I’ve spent a year out before but no one doubted I would be back. When I returned, everyone welcomed me with open arms. The fact the club has so much faith in me has helped me do so well here.

said Ancelotti. Agree.
Tonight is a big night. Rafael Benitez said:
The 2005 final was amazing, the best in the history of the competition. I don’t think we’ll see a game like that; if we do, I’ll need a doctor. It’s a difficult game for both teams and I don’t think we’ll see a lot of goals.
We know Kaká is a very good player, but our system is not to mark him individually. We mark zonally and try to control the play, the ball and the space.
We’re here because we’ve been doing the right things. We can be confident and calm. We’ve done the job, now we must try to enjoy it. If you do the right things and win then perfect, but don’t leave the pitch with regrets.

Ancelotti:

What has emerged is great harmony with the team and with the club. That’s the main reason we reached the final. We’ve just faced problems and solved them. That gives us strength and motivation. We’re very strong at the moment.

Seven of the Milan side and six from the Liverpool team that started two seasons ago are likely to be involved again from kick-off so they will know each other well.

Liverpool record May 21, 2007

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has defended the team’s playing style, claiming their recent record speaks for itself. The club’s recent achievements, having won the Champions League two years ago after being 3-0 down at half-time to Wednesday’s opponents AC Milan and also lifting the FA Cup last season.

People still say we’re not a great side but we’ve done something very special. It’s an unbelievable opportunity to get to two European Cup finals in three years and we intend to make the most of it.

About AC Milan, he said:

We’ve a lot of great memories of playing them but we’ve a lot of respect for them as well. They’re a great team and they showed that in the European Cup final last time. They played a great game and we just nicked it in the end, so we know it’ll be difficult but we’re hoping for the same result.

Liverpool’s captain is in a relaxed mood and have nothing to fear from AC Milan.
He said for uefa.com
I’ve watched Milan a lot this season and they are different from 2005, but they are still strong.
They showed against Manchester United that they are a fantastic team and deserve a lot of respect and that’s what we’ll give them on the night, but we won’t fear them. We’re a good team ourselves and we’re confident we can do the job. What’s important to us is that we prepare right and that the Liverpool team that’s been in Europe all season turns up in Athens. If that good team turns up then Milan are in for a really difficult game and we’re confident we can lift that cup.

White or Red May 6, 2007

This year UEFA Champions League final will be in red and white in Athena.
AC Milan have chosen to wear all-white. Milan’s preference for their white shirts stems from lifting five of their six European Champion Clubs’ Cups in those colours. Their ‘maglia fortunata’ – lucky jerseys – were on show when they won finals against SL Benfica (1963 and 1990), FC Steaua Bucuresti (1989), FC Barcelona (1994) and Juventus (2003). However, the all-white outfit has not been entirely auspicious. The San Siro giants made the same selection for Istanbul and ended up losing on penalties to Liverpool; they also went down to AFC Ajax in similar fashion in the 1995 showpiece. Two years before, Olympique de Marseille had overcome a Milan team in red and black.
Liverpool will wear their red home kit.
That means the teams will be wearing the same colours as when they met in the 2005 final in Istanbul, when Liverpool came back from 3-0 down at half-time to win on penalties.

United saw their Champions League hopes brutally crushed in the San Siro after 3-0. Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Manchester United “cut their own throats” with their poor first-half performance against AC Milan.
It is disappointing to come so close. We had done so well to get here. Milan were fresher and better prepared physically but we had to cope better with that situation. We had to get through the first 25 minutes of the game without cutting our own throats. But we gave away two sloppy goals. We should not be losing goals like that.
Cristiano had a disappointing night. He knows that but he is a young man and on nights like these he sees the professionalism and experience of AC Milan. It is good to see where he has to go.

Sir Alex Ferguson woke from a good night’s sleep in Milan convinced Manchester United have all the attributes required to reach the Champions League final. Ferguson, whose own impressive statistic is that he has never lost a European game as United boss after winning the first leg, has total belief in his players’ ability to rise to the occasion.

There is always an anxiety about big occasions. You hope everything works out the way you want it to. But I sleep okay, knowing I have a team that is confident, that will run to the last minute – and have a go.
I don’t think sitting on the edge of our box would do me, the team or the fans any good. If we are going to do it, we will do it our way. If we are going to lose we will do it our way. Hopefully, it will be good enough.

Ferguson will make a late decision over the fitness of central defensive duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

Liverpool is the first team from Athens Champions League final. Liverpool won with 4-1 after penalties (after 90 minutes Liverpool scored once witch cancelled Chelsea’s advantage from the first leg).
Mourinho’s disappointment was understandable, as he had to swallow a second semi-final defeat in front of an Anfield gallery.

It is a moment when everybody has to be strong. My players have a lot of reasons to be proud. We were the best team today, even against a team only playing for the Champions League. In extra-time we were the only team who tried to win, but football is like that and the penalty shoot-out is part of the game. My players did a great run in the Champions League. I respected Liverpool always in my words. I don’t need to say more and today I think the best team was Chelsea.
