Hitzfeld:
Milan were the better team, but there was no real difference in quality between the two sides. In the first 15 minutes the match was balanced, but then my team suddenly lost their heads. We gave the ball away too easily for the first goal. Seedorf is an extraordinary player but he shouldn’t have been allowed to get into a shooting position with as much space as he had. As for the second goal we shouldn’t have allowed Inzaghi to get into that position – these mistakes proved costly. In the second half we found a way back into the game and had a few chances. We were in good shape, perfectly prepared and had big plans for this match, but I have to admit that we don’t have the class of Milan. When they let the ball flow between their players, it is technical perfection. They play very intelligently and capitalise on every little mistake. They are one of the greatest teams in the world.
I think this was a great performance by my team. It was not easy to wrest back the initiative in the tie after the first leg, and we didn’t expect to score so easily in the first half, but now we have the opportunity to continue representing Italian football in the competition. You need experience as well as technical ability to do well in the UEFA Champions League and we are very experienced. We couldn’t take it for granted that we would reach the quarter-finals, but we’re still here and I’m happy about that. Manchester United will be a great test for us but we want to reach the final in Athens and show what we are capable of.

Bayern, head into the game on a high having grabbed a 2-2 draw at the San Siro and with it two away goals. Anyway, Milan is forced to score tonight after the last week draw.
Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld:
We go up a gear when we’re at home. We are capable of pushing up our performance by ten to 20 per cent.
Hitzfeld have some injured players: Willy Sagnol, Mehmet Scholl and Martin Demichelis. Lucio and Owen Hargreaves are uncertain.
Milan chief Carlo Ancelotti will replace suspended Alberto Gilardino with Filippo Inzaghi:
He is not yet 100 per cent fit but I’m confident he will play. The goals he has scored in the Champions League speak volumes and he has scored against Bayern in the past.

AC Milan captain Paolo Maldini believes Champions League success is their only chance of lifting their season from normal to extraordinary.
The Champions League has been our primary objective for many years now. Over the years we have done continuously well in this competition. We must give a bit more in the league. We could have done better there but, in the end, we are close to our minimum goal for the season, which is fourth place. However, a normal season could be transformed into an extraordinary one thanks to the Champions League dream. Playing the first leg at home isn’t an advantage, but it isn’t something to worry about either
Bayern Munich coach has told his players that concentration could be key.
Football is a team game and if we can be compact, and keep our concentration for the full 90 minutes, then we can come away with a good result. I feel this tie will be decided by just one goal. We have just as good a chance of winning here as we do at home.

After Uefa’s decision Bayern appealed against the censure, with Kahn having conceded he did not expect a ban after apologising for the incident. Meanwhile, the club have decided to withdraw the appeal, meaning Kahn will sit out in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-final with Milan at San Siro.

Ottmar Hitzfeld:
I have never heard of a player being hit with such a heavy penalty for such an offence. We have some hope that we will be successful, like in the case of Van Bommel, in getting some leniency from UEFA.
